Batteries: what applies, what a passport must carry and when
Scope. Light means of transport batteries, industrial batteries above 2 kWh and electric-vehicle batteries placed on the EU market or put into service.
What Digital Product Passport rules apply to batteries?
The Battery Passport is the only product-specific Digital Product Passport that is adopted, dated and close. From 18 February 2027 every light means of transport battery, every industrial battery with a capacity greater than 2 kWh and every electric-vehicle battery placed on the EU market or put into service must have one, under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542.
Three other dates matter and none of them is a second deadline for a business. The Regulation entered into force on 17 August 2023, adopted, which is when the rules were fixed rather than when they bite. 18 August 2026 was the statutory date in Article 77(9) for detailed legitimate-interest access rules, adopted as an obligation on the Commission rather than on you. Q4 2026 is indicative, the Commission roadmap's timing for the battery access-rights implementing act, and an indicative date can move.
So the passport is settled and the access layer is not. A battery passport combines model-level information with information about the individual battery, which makes it the most detailed regime in force and a poor template for any other category.

Dates, and what kind of date each one is
- 17 August 2023 Adopted Entry into force. Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 entered into force
- 18 August 2026 Adopted Legal implementation deadline. Statutory date in Article 77(9) for detailed legitimate-interest access rules
- Q4 2026 Indicative Indicative implementing-act date. Commission roadmap indicates Battery access-rights implementing act
- 18 February 2027 Adopted DPP application date. Battery Passport becomes mandatory for covered LMT, EV and industrial batteries above 2 kWh
Adopted means a duty exists in law from that date. Planned means an institution has committed to a measure. Indicative means an official planning date that can move. Every row is in the obligations dataset.
