A GTIN is valid when it is 8, 12, 13 or 14 digits and its final check digit matches the digits before it. This tool checks that arithmetic and reports the format and the prefix range. A well-formed number is not proof that the product exists or that the number belongs to you, and the prefix says where the number was licensed rather than where the product was made.

What the check digit actually proves

The last digit is calculated from the ones before it, so a single mistyped digit almost always fails. That is all it proves. It is a typing check, not a statement that the number is yours or that anything is registered against it.
